LAX vs Long Beach Airport (LGB) — Which Is Better for You? (2026)
Long Beach Airport is one of LA's best-kept secrets — a tiny, relaxed airport 20 miles south of LAX. Here's when it makes sense to fly LGB instead, and when LAX is still the better choice.

The Long Beach Airport Experience
Long Beach Airport is genuinely unique in the LA area. The terminal features outdoor walkways and open-air boarding areas with views of palm trees and the San Gabriel Mountains. Security lines are typically under 10 minutes. You can arrive 45 minutes before a domestic flight and still be relaxed.
The airport has a city-imposed cap on daily flights (50 as of 2026) and strict noise ordinances, which keeps it small by design. This is both its charm and its limitation.
Flight Availability
This is LGB's biggest limitation:
- JetBlue: The dominant carrier — flights to JFK, BOS, FLL, and other East Coast cities
- Southwest: Good domestic coverage to their hub cities (LAS, OAK, PHX, etc.)
- Delta: Limited routes, primarily SLC connection
- Hawaiian Airlines: Direct to Honolulu
- No international flights — domestic only
- No red-eye flights — noise curfew (10pm-7am)
Ground Transportation
Ground transport from LGB is dramatically simpler than LAX:
Which Airport by Destination
| Going to… | Better Airport | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Long Beach / Lakewood | LGB | You're already there |
| South Bay (Torrance, Hermosa) | Either | Both ~15-25 min depending on traffic |
| Orange County (Anaheim, Irvine) | LGB | 20-30 min vs 45-75 from LAX |
| Downtown LA | Either | Similar drive times (~25-40 min) |
| Beverly Hills / West LA | LAX | 15-25 min from LAX vs 35-50 from LGB |
| Santa Monica / Venice | LAX | 10-20 min from LAX vs 40-60 from LGB |
| San Pedro / Cruise Port | LGB | 15 min from LGB vs 30+ from LAX |
The Verdict
Choose Long Beach if:
Your destination is in Southeast LA or Orange County, a JetBlue or Southwest direct flight exists, you value a stress-free airport experience, and you don't need late-night or early-morning flights.
Choose LAX if:
You're flying internationally, your destination is in West LA, you need specific airlines or schedules, or you need flights outside the 7am-10pm window.
