What PSP has going for it: Small, fast, pleasant airport. The entire arrivals-to-car process takes 15–20 minutes. You're at your hotel within 45–60 minutes of landing — compared to 4+ hours from LAX on a festival Friday.
The limitations: Limited routes. Non-stop service primarily from Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, New York, Phoenix, and a handful of other hubs.
PSP during Coachella weekend: Demand is extremely high, prices spike. A roundtrip that costs $400 normally might be $1,200+ for Coachella weekend. Check prices early.
Ontario Airport (ONT) — The Underrated Middle Ground
Ontario International Airport is 60 miles from Indio — a meaningfully shorter drive (55–75 minutes) than LAX's 130 miles. Southwest Airlines has a strong ONT presence, and United, Delta, and American also serve Ontario.
The ONT airport experience is significantly more pleasant than LAX — smaller, faster, easier to navigate. The I-10 East drive from Ontario to Indio sees significantly less festival congestion than the full LAX-to-Indio stretch.
